Lynley Smith’s second book, the biography of a child brought up in the slums of Nairobi, and how sponsorship and the hand of protection of a good God brought her through many hard trials is a must read for anyone interested in helping children from deprived backgrounds.
- Regarding Zainabu, one of the things I would confidently say is that sponsorship was the greatest gift that anyone could have given Zainab Considering the kind of life she lived, she is a strong girl and school gave her a chance in life. As a social worker, I always thought she would drop out of school at an early age and we continually encouraged and reminded her of how lucky she was to have such support In spite of the family challenges, poor parenting and neglect by her illiterate grandmother, she still managed to finish her schooling. Without ongoing support through sponsorship Zainabu would not have reached even Grade 3 and, to me, what the sponsor did was honourable. There are many children like Zainabu in Kenya in need of such support. Sponsorship gives them a chance to live and enjoy life.
Faith Kamau, Afri-Lift Riziki social worker, 1998 – 2006. Nairobi, Kenya.
As part of an organisation that cares deeply for and ministers to such children, Zainabu’s Story is all too familiar. A direct assault on the senses, the unmistakable, gut-wrenching poverty of Kenya’s Kibera slum is vividly portrayed in this book and the role of the child sponsor shines forth as a lifeline to opportunity and change. Surely God has special blessings reserved for those who reach out to a child in need.
